If you are still using Windows computers, you are probably using Windows 7, or maybe Windows 8.x. If so, you are under assault by Microsoft to “upgrade” to Windows 10.
At this point in time, I strongly advise you to NOT do that. Windows 10, the new operating system from Microsoft, was released to the public in August of 2015. It will be a free upgrade until August of this year, 2016.
Why do I advise against it? Simple. We really don’t know what it will break on YOUR computer.
Microsoft did extensive beta testing before releasing the operating system, but in ANY software of this complexity, all possible hardware and software combinations were impossible to test. This means that final beta testing gets done by the people who install the OS. The danger is that if you install it, YOU run the risk that some of your older software may no longer work. It may also mean that some of your older hardware may not work. Printers, scanners etc.
To make matters worse, Microsoft keeps on bombarding you with a nag notification in the lower right of your screen and they have even gone so far as to tell us that in machines that are set to automatically install updates, that they will automatically upgrade such computers at some point in the NEAR future!
Here is my suggestion: Wait until Windows 10.1 gets released before upgrading. When will that happen? Who knows? You have until August to get the free upgrade, so why not wait until then if 10.1 doesn’t come out before then?
In the meantime, how can you stop the constant nagging and how can you prevent the automatic upgrade? As it turns out there is a piece of software that you can download and run that will keep that from happening.
Go to http://blog.ultimateoutsider.com/2015/08/using-gwx-stopper-to-permanently-remove.html and download the software, install and run it. You might want to get your tech savvy kids or grandkids to help with this one as it is a bit geeky.
Or, you could just get a Mac and put this foolishness behind you once and for all. Just saying…
