Ever lost a key, or been locked out? Me too. I recently ran across KeyMe, a New York City based startup that offers a unique way to solve the “lost key” and “locked out” problem.
They offer a free iPhone app that allows you to scan your key and digitally store it in their secure servers. Then if you get locked out or lose your key, you can take your iPhone to any locksmith, open the app on the phone and let the locksmith follow the directions that the phone displays. The locksmith is then able to create a new key for you! You can learn more about the app and get it here: https://itunes.apple.com/app/id663884543?mt=8 If you have an Android or Windows phone, go this link: https://key.me/app then scroll to the bottom of the page and enter your email address in the form provided so that they can notify you when those apps become available. For now it’s only available for the iPhone.
If you have another problem (one that many REALTORS® face) of having to duplicate keys for your lockboxes, then you can scan the client’s key and have the service mail you a key. Often within a few days.
If you live in Manhattan below 125th Street, they will even deliver a key to you! They have also created kiosks (only in Manhattan for now) that allow you to walk up, insert your key and have it duplicated on the spot.
I think that this is a good idea, but if you are squeamish about having your house keys digitally stored, then you might want to pass on this. Given that it seems that almost any site can be hacked, you might have reason for concern. On the other hand, if this could save you from the hassles of a lost key or being locked out, it could be just what the doctor ordered. What do you think?
